Saturday AM

We've been out of town for the past week for Jay's developmental appts, so as a result, we haven't been able to be as strict with his GFCF diet. No bad behaviors were noticed today, but the head banging is more prominent now and he is having a hard time going down for a nap today.

Wednesday PM

After a nap, Jay woke up and played with his toys, but was very short tempered. He had a temper tantrum for no apparent reason and started to hit himself in the head with his trains. He ate a few sweet potatoe fries for dinner and drank his milk with cereal added. He also had a bowel movement which was the first since Saturday.

Wednesday AM (in Slidell)

There have been no entries for a few days b/c I was very ill and in the hospital. We are currently staying in Slidell at my parents' house for the week. Yesterday we attended my cousin's funeral and I had to read so my mom and aunt fed Jay peppermints to keep him quiet while I was at the alter. So of course he was out of control for the rest of the day. Today was just as bad. He had his prevacid on an empty stomach, followed by his rice milk 20 minutes later with added cereal. He also ate a bowl of dry GFCF cheerios. I took a bath and he got upset b/c he couldn't take one with me and his anger spiraled out of control. He ran through the house screaming and tore up my niece's room and then pushed 3 vases off of the table in the living room. He was immediately upset over the broken glass. He calmed down and went down for a nap without a fuss.

We ran some errands and my husband wanted to stop at a small greek restaurant for lunch. Jay misbehaved for most of the morning, including head banging, but that's usually what happens in public. He ate well at the restaurant although his meal was not GFCF. He had fries and pita bread. We came home and he went down for a nap without a fuss.

He did seem like he was seeking pressure today b/c he tried really hard to bang his head in my chest or rub it against mine. But he was not in an angry mood.

Wednesday PM

After Jay's nap, we went to the dentist for a cleaning and he had his first cleaning done. After his cleaning he played in the waiting room with my husband and had a temper tantrum when it was time to go. The tantrum included screaming and intentionally hitting his head on the hardwood floor and the falling out flat on his back outside on the concrete porch. I think that was just b/c of the 2 hours he was there. He went to the YMCA childcare for 30 minutes and then came home and had GFCF chicken nuggets and some fries. He drank his rice milk and went to bed without a fuss.

Wednesday AM

Jay took his Prevacid this morning on an empty stomach and waited 20 minutes before breakfast. He drank his rice milk with beechnut rice cereal added, but didn't eat his dry cereal this morning. He went down for a nap an hour early with no fuss.

Tuesday PM

Jay went down for a nap without a fight and slept for 2.5 hours. As soon as he woke up, the angry behavior resumed. He was placed in timeout several times tonight. He had a grilled Jennie O chicken frank tonight for dinner and two small bites of my grilled steak. He went to bed without a fight.

Tuesday AM

Jay sucked his Prevacid solutab this morning and then had breakfast 20 minutes later. Rice milk with Beechnut rice cereal mixed in and Enviro Kids Leapin Lemurs cereal (which contains soy oil). After breakfast, he played in his room until I got him dressed to go to the YMCA. He ran to the childcare room with no fuss and went in to play. I handed the worker his special cookies, reminding her that he cannot have the regular animal crackers there. He stayed for an hour and when I picked him up he was playing with one of the workers, away from the other kids, but they didn't give me any bad reports on him. Sometimes Jay prefers adults to kids his age. We were leaving the YMCA ns he had a temper tantrum for an unknown reason. He threw his bag down and threw himself to the floor and started screaming. I told him to pick up his bag and come on. He had a very angry look on his face and got up and snatched his bag up and actually stormed out of the door. The fit continued once he got outside. He angrily snatched off his hat and threw it to the ground, followed by his bag. I told him to pick it up and he screamed. He did this 2 more times before making it to the truck. We arrived home and he immediately went to his room and closed the door. I was in the kitchen fixing his lunch and I heard him scream an angry scream and then I heard things flying around his room. I went straight to his room and he had flipped over his elmo table, flipped over his train table, pulled his sound machine from the shelf and threw large toys around the room. All within just a few seconds. I told him to pick the toys up and he angrily snatched them off of the ground and put them back, screaming the entire time. I will ask the workers tomorrow if he happened to have any of their animal crackers by chance. For lunch he at GFCFSF toast and peanut butter and drank 100% apple juice mixed with a prescribed laxative.

Daily GFCF Journal

I am a mother of a 2.5 yr old boy, Jay, who has sensory integration disorder and is possibly autistic (he has an appt with a developmental pediatrician in a few weeks). Jay has had GI issues since the day we brought him home from the hospital. His issues are identical to those of ASD kids. I was told about the GFCF(Gluten Free, Casien Free) diet and tried it out over a month ago. I wasn't very strict with it, but noticed a significant change in his bowel movements and less head banging within weeks of eliminating most of the gluten and casein from his diet (mainly breads!!). Yesterday we were at my parents and they was a table full of snack foods, none of which were GFCF (my family doesn't understand the importance yet, but that will change soon), and we was begging for cake, so I gave him a small piece with no icing. He immediately had a loose bowel movement, had nightmares in his sleep last night, and has been extremely irritable today and has been banging his head on everything. I am certainly convinced that this is indeed a reaction to the piece of cake I gave him. So I've decided to go full force with this diet. I know that I will need to keep a daily journal to make note of what he's had to eat each day and how he behaved. This will help me (and the Drs and my family) to see how food affects him and how important this diet is for him. This blog is mainly just going to be a journal, but feel free to follow and comment, or share your stories with me.
